56 Leonard

56 Leonard is located at the intersection of Church and Leonard streets in TriBeCa. Rich in culture and history, and home to the finest shops and restaurants, TriBeCa’s romantic and storied streets appeal to a local and global audience, making it one of the world’s most desired and distinctive neighborhoods.
56 Leonard’s neighborhood offerings are coveted: internationally acclaimed restaurants, year-round festivals and events and verdant riverside parks. TriBeCa’s famously rich architectural setting, destination galleries, museums and public art make it the cultural focal point of lower Manhattan. In an unprecedented collaboration between artist and architect, the tower designed by Herzog & de Meuron is seamlessly integrated at its base with a specially commissioned work by sculptor Anish Kapoor. The relationship between building and sculpture is so closely cultivated that they appear to form a single unified object, exemplifying true synergy between art and architecture. A 1991 winner of the Turner Prize and recipient of the Unilever Series commission for the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, Kapoor’s work was recently the subject of a major American retrospective at the ICA Boston. Just as with Herzog & de Meuron, Kapoor uses the powers of material and form to viscerally address the viewer. 56 Leonard will be his first permanent public work in New York.
